Sustaining urban ecosystem services with local stewards participation in Stockholm (Sweden)

چکیده

Urban ecosystems are becoming increasingly important as nodes of interaction between humans and nature. Sustainable management of urban ecosystems is therefore a crucial issue that needs to be analysed. The aim of this paper is to explore if adaptive co-management may be a viable approach for managing ecosystem resilience of a biodiversity-rich urban landscape in Stockholm, called the National Urban Park. Adaptive co-management is an integrative and place-specific approach that focuses on creating functional feedback loops between social and ecological systems. A social-ecological inventory based on multiple forms of qualitative data reveals that there are twenty-four local steward associations linked to ecosystem services, like air filtration, recreation, pollination, seed dispersal, delivered to the Department of Systems Ecology, Stockholm University, S-10691 Stockholm, Sweden. Reconnecting Cities to the Biosphere: Stewardship of Green Infrastructure and Urban Ecosystem Services

Within-city green infrastructure can offer opportunities and new contexts for people to become stewards of ecosystem services. We analyze cities as social-ecological systems, synthesize the literature, and provide examples from more than 15 years of research in the Stockholm urban region, Sweden. The social-ecological approach spans from investigating ecosystem properties to the social framewor...

Scale-Crossing Brokers and Network Governance of Urban Ecosystem Services: The Case of Stockholm

Urban ecosystem services are crucial for human well-being and the livability of cities. A central challenge for sustaining ecosystem services lies in addressing scale mismatches between ecological processes on one hand, and social processes of governance on the other. This article synthesizes a set of case studies from urban green areas in Stockholm, Sweden—allotment gardens, urban parks, cemet...

Measuring social-ecological dynamics behind the generation of ecosystem services.

The generation of ecosystem services depends on both social and ecological features. Here we focus on management, its ecological consequences, and social drivers. Our approach combined (1) quantitative surveys of local species diversity and abundance of three functional groups of ecosystem service providers (pollinators, seed dispersers, and insectivores) with (2) qualitative studies of local m...

Double Insurance in Dealing with Extremes: Ecological and Social Factors for Making Nature-Based Solutions Last

Global urbanisation has led to extreme population densities often in areas prone to problems such as extreme heat, storm surges, coastal and surface flooding, droughts and fires. Although nature based solutions (NBS) often have specific targets, one of the overarching objectives with NBS design and implementation is to protect human livelihoods and well-being, not least by protecting real estat...

Sources and fates of heavy metals in complex, urban aquatic systems: modelling study based on Stockholm, Sweden

Despite management of point sources, heavy metals today remain at an elevated level in the urban environment, with diffuse sources dominating the emissions. In order to manage these pollutants, it is necessary to understand the coupling between the urban sources of heavy metals and their monitored, environmental levels, for example in aquatic sediments. In this work, we suggest a simple approac...
